Shiba Inu
Puppies
Shiba Inu known affectionately as Shibas
originated from Japan where there are still more Shibas than any
other breed of dog. Shibas were originally hunting dogs that were
used to flush out birds and small game from bushes. It is
interesting to note that Shiba Inus are one of the six original
breeds developed in Japan. The Shiba is the smallest of the size
breeds but all are related. The largest size is called the Akita.
Medium sized are the Kishu, Hokkaido, Shikoku and Kai. The Shiba
Inu is a recognized member of the American Kennel Club since
1992.
Shiba Inu puppies are cute little balls of fur
that are also very feisty. Shibas have a mind of their own and this
is apparent even from an early age. Shiba pups may be different
colors but red is the most common color. They often have dark
snouts. The Shiba is often used as a model for stuffed toys because
of it's universal appeal.
When deciding on a Shiba Inu puppy always make
the decision based on intellect and not on cuteness. The Shiba
needs a lot of attention and can be a slightly aggressive little
dog. The Shiba is very territorial and for this reason makes a good
watchdog. Shiba Inus must be properly trained and socialized in
order to become happy and healthy members of your family. If you
have small children you may not want to get a Shiba Inu until the
children are older.
Despite some of these negative characteristics
the Shiba can be an exceptionally loving and loyal pet. The Shiba
requires little care of the coat. Shibas do need daily exercise,
which helps to keep them settled and happy. These dogs are meant to
live as part of your family and are quite sensitive and
intelligent. They don not do well as outside pets.
If you've decided that the Shiba Inu is for you
than the next step is to locate a reputable breeder. Avoid getting
a Shiba (or any dog) from a pet store. Reputable breeders are not
allowed to place their Shiba puppies in pet stores. Instead you can
find quality puppies through breeders. Look online or through the
Shiba Inu Club website to find links to reputable puppies.
When you bring your puppy home the first step is
to begin socialization with other family members and other pets.
The Shiba sometimes prefers to be the only pet in the home but if
introduced at an early age may take well to another dog in the
home. Training is important in the early part of the Shiba's life.
Many people endorse crate training that helps the dog feel safe and
secure. Housebreaking is rather easy since the Shiba is very
smart.
When the puppy is still young you need to start
obedience training and socialization outside the home. This will
help your dog grow to be a happy and loving member of the family.
The Shiba is known for a slightly stubborn temperament so you must
teach the puppy that you are the leader. Use rewards and praise for
training as these techniques work well.
