Akita
Exercise
Akitas are large dogs that need plenty of
fresh air and exercise. Because of their thick coats they
prefer cooler temperatures. An Akita will do best with a fenced
yard. Akitas love to romp and play fetch. Akita behavior will
often be better if the animal is allowed the proper amount of
daily exercise. This type of dog needs a large yard. Your Akita
may like an hour or more of exercise per day.
Akita puppies don't need an exercise
regimen, but adults do. Akitas like to have a large yard to run
in. They like to chase birds and small animals that they see
outside. Don't be surprised if they bring home a prize once in
awhile. A fenced yard is important to the health and well being
of the Akita. They will stay safe in a fenced yard, which gives
them the ability to run freely as they like to do. Be aware
that they become very protective of their own territory. They
can become aggressive when a person or dog they don't know
comes into their yard.
Akitas don't like to sleep away from the
family so be sure to allow them to stay inside overnight.
Although they may not look like it from their size Akitas are
very sensitive dogs that enjoy spending time with their
families. They bond with the family members and become
protective of them.
Like any other dogs be certain to bring them
in when it rains or there is extreme weather. While they like
the outdoors they should not be kept outdoors. The Akita does
best in a home rather than an apartment. Because the Akita is a
large dog it needs plenty of space. Always provide a specific
area for your Akita to sleep. This can be accomplished by using
a crate, which is recommended by most breeders and
trainers.
Teach Akitas general obedience including how
to properly walk on a leash when they are puppies. Your Akita
will be able to get much more exercise if it can walk well on a
leash and obey simple commands. Akitas are very intelligent and
can pick up quickly on obedience training. When playing with
your Akita try to steer away from games that involve using
force such as tug-of-war. These types of games can provide
negative behavior reinforcements and confuse the dog. While
they can be fun while the Akita is a puppy he will soon become
very strong and can become aggressive with these types of
games.
Akitas love to spend time with their
families and this includes exercise time. When you take your
dog to an exercise park or trail it is best to keep your dog on
a leash all the time. Even well trained Akitas can become
aggressive towards smaller dogs or animals that they don't
know. For this reason you should always supervise your Akita
whenever he is outside.
An Akita likes to have plenty of exercise
and keeping him inside can make him depressed. Just like people
who don't get enough exercise your Akita craves fresh air every
day. Use the time to exercise your Akita as bonding time with
him. Akitas like routines so try to provide a daily schedule
that your Akita will start to remember.
